Future OF computers…

Computers of Tomorrow

Today’s computers operate using transistors, wires and electricity. Future computers might use atoms, fibers and light. Personally, I don’t give a byte what makes it tick, as long as it does the job. If I could accidentally spill my coffee and not have it cost $848, that would be a cool feature.
But let us assume that you are not still bitter from a recent laptop replacement. You might stop to consider what the world might be like, if computers the size of molecules become a reality. These are the types of computers that could be everywhere, but never seen. Nano sized bio-computers that could target specific areas inside your body. Giant networks of computers, in your clothing, your house, your car. Entrenched in almost every aspect of our lives and yet you may never give them a single thought.
Complete understanding of the theories behind these future computer technologies is not for the meek. For example, my research into quantum computers was made all the more difficult, after I learned that in light of her constant interference, it is theoretically possible my mother-in-law could be in two places at once.
If you have the heart, take a gander at this collection of articles and links on the most promising new computer technologies. If not, dare to imagine the ways that billions of tiny, powerful computers will change our society.
What are Quantum Computers?
A quantum computer is a computer that makes direct use of distinctively quantum mechanical phenomena to perform operations on data.
In a classical (or conventional) computer, the amount of data is measured by bits; in a quantum computer, the data is measured by qubits.
The basic principle of quantum computation is that the quantum properties of particles can be used to represent and structure data, and that quantum mechanisms can be devised and built to perform operations with these data.
What are Optical Computers?

The computers we use today use transistors and semiconductors to control electricity. Computers of the future may utilize crystals and metamaterials to control light. Optical computers make use of light particles called photons.
NASA scientists are working to solve the need for computer speed using light

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. That’s 982,080,000 feet per second — or 11,784,960,000 inches. In a billionth of a second, one nanosecond, photons of light travel just a bit less than a foot, not considering resistance in air or of an optical fiber strand or thin film. Just right for doing things very quickly in microminiaturized computer chips.
“Entirely optical computers are still some time in the future,” says Dr. Frazier, “but electro-optical hybrids have been possible since 1978, when it was learned that photons can respond to electrons through media such as lithium niobate. Newer advances have produced a variety of thin films and optical fibers that make optical interconnections and devices practical. We are focusing on thin films made of organic molecules, which are more light sensitive than inorganics.
Organics can perform functions such as switching, signal processing and frequency doubling using less power than inorganics. Inorganics such as silicon used with organic materials let us use both photons and electrons in current hybrid systems, which will eventually lead to all-optical computer systems.”
“What we are accomplishing in the lab today will result in development of super-fast, super-miniaturized, super-lightweight and lower cost optical computing and optical communication devices and systems,” Frazier explained.
What are DNA Computers?
DNA computers use DNA to store information and perform complex calculations. DNA has a vast amount of storage capacity computers might tap the vast storage capacity that enables DNA to hold the complex blueprints of living organisms. The storage capacity of a single gram of DNA can hold as much information as one trillion compact discs.
DNA Computing

Is there a computer in your genes? A team led by Dr. Leonard Adleman has shown that DNA can be used to solve complex mathematical problems. In Adleman’s lab at USC, one-fiftieth of a teaspoon of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has solved two modestly difficult problems—the “Hamilton Path,” or “Traveling Salesman,” problem and the “Customer Satisfaction” or “NP-complete 3-SAT” problem. His experiment has been heralded as the “start of a new era,” forging an unprecedented link between computational science and life science.

Personal Computer in a Pen

Claim: Photographs show a conceptual pen-sized personal computer system.

All I can say is WOW!?

look closely n' guess what they could be...

PENS WITH HIDDEN CAMS?????

any wild guesses now?
no clue?...
ladies and gentlemen... congratulations!
You have just now looked into the future...
yep that's right! no booing now...
you have seen something that would replace your PC in the near future....

In the revolution of miniature computers,
the scientists are ahead with Bluetooth technology...
See the forthcoming computers within our pockets

This pen sort of instrument produces both the monitor as well
as the keyboard on flat surfaces from where you can just
carry out the normal operations you do on your desktop.

Origins: It seems to many of us these days that the pace of
technological change is so great that it outstrips our imaginations — just
as soon as we can conceive of the next nifty electronic gadget we'd like
to have, we find out that somebody has already built it.

Miniaturized devices such as cameras and telephones are examples of
now-common technologies that just a few years ago most of us rarely
encountered outside the fictional world of spy thrillers. Miniaturized
personal computers are the next logical step, but many readers might be
surprised to learn that a plan for PC components housed in devices the
size and shape of ballpoint pens (as shown above) was showcased by a major
electronics company over two years ago.

At the 2003 ITU Telecom World exhibition held in Geneva, the Tokyo-based
NEC corporation displayed a conceptual prototype of what they dubbed a
"Pen-style Personal Networking Gadget Package," or P-ISM. As NEC described
the P-ISM:
P-ISM is a gadget package including five functions: a pen-style cellular
phone with a handwriting data input function, virtual keyboard, a very
small projector, camera scanner, and personal ID key with cashless pass
function. P-ISMs are connected with one another through short-range
wireless technology. The whole set is also connected to the Internet
through the cellular phone function. This personal gadget in a
minimalistic pen style enables the ultimate ubiquitous computing.
The P-ISM system was based on "low-cost electronic perception technology"
produced by the San Jose, California, firm of Canesta, Inc., developers of
technologies such as the "virtual keyboard" (although the last two
pictures shown above appear to be virtual keyboard products sold by other
companies such as VKB rather than components of the P-ISM prototype).

We've dubbed this item "partly true" because, as far as we know, no
functional prototype of P-ISM system was built or displayed. The items
shown in these pictures were more on the level of props created to show
off a concept for something that might be built.

The future of e-paper: The Kindle is only the beginning

Thin, flexible, low-power digital paper is just around the corner. Will your next book or newspaper be 'e'?

June 6, 2008 (Computerworld) Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle has turned a long underperforming category of tech gadget -- e-book readers -- into an overnight hit, and in the process has boosted interest in electronic paper display (EPD) technology. The Kindle and its rival, the Sony Reader 505, both boast e-paper displays that look unnervingly like printed pages and consume next to no power. However, today's EPDs -- and today's e-book readers -- are only the beginning.
EPD technology has been a long time coming. The idea of e-paper, a data display that looks and works like a sheet of paper, has been around for decades. In theory, such a screen could be "printed" electronically, would hold its contents without consuming power, could be viewed using reflected light (rather than the backlight required for LCD screens), and could be "erased" and "rewritten" as often as desired.

Amazon's Kindle has brought EPD technology into the public eye.Current products like the Kindle -- a clever mix of features, including a low-power processor, inexpensive flash memory, built-in EVDO wide-area networking and, of course, an e-paper display that consumes next to no power -- have finally brought the technology into the public eye. "E-book readers have gotten the world excited about e-paper," says Barry Young, an analyst at market research firm DisplaySearch.
But although the technology behind e-paper displays has improved greatly over time, it's still just on the threshold of real success, according to Young and other observers. Displays like the Kindle's are beginning to provide the contrast and resolution of traditional ink on paper, but physical flexibility and full-color display are still around the corner.
A display technology based on electronic 'ink'
The first successful demonstration of e-paper technology was made by Nick Sheridon at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the 1970s. His technology, called Gyricon, used tiny rotating spheres of electrically charged plastic, black on one side, white on the other, suspended in bubbles of oil between transparent electrodes.Gyricon technology never delivered the contrast and resolution that a display screen for personal electronic devices requires, but it was used for signs. (Xerox and PARC are now looking at other ways to combine paper and technology, including papers whose printed images fade away over a short period of time -- like a day.)
The current crop of EPD displays is based on electronic "ink" that the E Ink Corp., a supplier of electronic ink technology in Cambridge, Mass., has been developing since 1997. E Ink's electrophoretic technology puts oppositely charged black and white pigments into tiny "microcapsules" filled with a transparent fluid. The capsules are fixed to a substrate and sandwiched between electrodes, and when a current is applied, one pigment is drawn to the positive electrode, one to the negative.
The ink is bistable -- that is, it requires electrical power only to change its state, making it very energy-efficient. Although displays based on this ink are not as high-contrast as backlit computer screens, which can make them hard to read in dim light, their reflective surface allows them to be read in daylight situations that would wash out conventional laptop displays. Most importantly, eliminating the power demands of the backlighting needed by conventional LCD displays means that e-paper displays draw negligible power.

Tiny magnetic GPS tracker with USB

Here’s a relatively inexpensive, yet very inconspicuous magnetic GPS tracker that you can hide on your car to keep tabs on your no-good kids and/or your no-good spouse.

The Driving Activity Reporter from Hammacher Schlemmer sells for $229, runs on two AAA lithium batteries good for three weeks, and uses a 16-channel GPS receiver to log up to 100 hours of driving activity.

Best of all, it’s compatible with Google Earth so you can ooh and ahh at all the 3D buildings in your town as you find out that your better half spent the night at a coworkers house.

The Driving Activity Reporter.

This is the device that monitors a car's activity and provides a detailed report of places, routes, and speeds traveled. It uses a 16-channel GPS receiver to track the movements of the car to which it is attached (internally or externally, using the device's built-in magnet for covert purposes), storing locations on its built-in flash memory that holds up to 100 hours of driving activity. Removed from the car, the reporter connects to your computer's USB port, and the included software allows you to view the time, date, and precise locations visited--even how fast a driver was traveling--using animated digital street maps. The data can also be examined using Google Earth (a free application from the Internet) for precise satellite pictures of locations visited. Durable, water-resistant frame enables operation between -15° to 185° F. Two AAA lithium batteries (required) provide up to three weeks of operation; device will enter sleep mode if it does not detect car movement within two minutes. 3 3/4" L x 1 1/2" W x 1 1/4" D.
